Inventive and Intrepid: Illustrations by Rockwell Kent
September 12-November 19, 2009
Painter, printmaker, illustrator, writer, architect and adventurer, Rockwell Kent (1882-1971) derived enormous creative energy from the physical challenges he sought in remote lands, including Alaska (1918-19), Tierra del Fuego (1922), and Greenland (late 1920s and 1930s). His published accounts of these journeys, copiously illustrated with ink drawings and wood engravings, made him famous, as did exhibitions of his dramatic, luminous oil paintings. This exhibition presents Kent’s unique artistic vision through more than 80 illustrations as well as paintings related to his travels.
