The Imani Winds was created in 1996 with the purpose of bringing together European and African musical traditions in a traditional wind quintet. Their 2006 recording The Classical Underground was nominated for a Grammy Award, and The Philadelphia Inquirer has praised the quartet as both "polished and virtuosic." Their Philadelphia Chamber Music Society return features works by Piazzolla, Villa-Lobos, Carter and others.
