7th Bastille Day Celebration - Le Combat dans l’ile (Fire and Ice)
July 11, 2009
This overlooked gem of the nouvelle vague, Alain Cavalier’s feature debut, is a tale of love and betrayal cloaked in the guise of a stylish political thriller. Jean-Louis Trintignant’s right-wing extremist Clement is caught in a love triangle with left-leaning pacifist Paul (Henri Serre). As Clement is driven deeper into the world of terrorism and political assassination, his impeding duel with Paul promises a dramatic conclusion. Produced by Louis Malle, this visually stunning film is often compared to the work of Robert Bresson and marks an impressive beginning for Cavalier.
