Charles Dutoit leads a fascinating trio of European works from across two centuries. In her Philadelphia Orchestra debut, soloist Isabelle Faust stars in the soaring melodies and gentle Romantic breezes of the towering Violin Concerto by Johannes Brahms. The program begins with a heroic overture by Beethoven and also features Arthur Honegger's Third Symphony from 1946. This modern morality tale portrays humanity's struggle between misery and happiness, barbarity and peace--in music that runs from gripping to ethereal, from steely-edged to tranquil.
