COBALT Winter Dance Performance: Nutcracker! and Carnival of the Animals •
December 15-December 22, 2012
COBALT’s Nutcracker blends contemporary verve with strong classical roots. The joyous and moving Waltz of the Snowflakes, an audience favorite, is danced barefoot by senior company members in a flurry of confetti snow, while the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Waltz of the Flowers are presented in full neo-classic tradition with the pink satin pointe shoes that seemingly allow a dancer to hover above the stage.
Set to the chamber music of Camille Saint-Saens, The Carnival of the Animals is an original dance by COBALT. Dancers evoke a playful world in which lions morph seamlessly into birds, fish, elephants and deer. “It’s pretty incredible that the slightest twitch of a hand or head can trigger recognition of a specific animal, Vegso-Wilson said. “The dances I made are pared down, so that the power of that moment is intact.” She further describes her work as “love letters to my dancers.” The program will also feature the choreography of Kristin Pontz, well-known for her daring musical theater and modern dance choreography.
“When we say COBALT is extraordinary dance, homegrown in Lancaster County, we mean it,” said Shari Vegso-Wilson, the dance company’s Artistic Director. “It results in performances that surprise and engage our audience every time. Just like Lancaster County, COBALT is a vibrant juxtaposition of contemporary and traditional.”
Following the December 16 performance, children will have an opportunity to personally meet the Sugar Plum Fairy. The December 22 performance is a benefit on behalf of the Lancaster Dance for Parkinson’s Project. Tickets for all shows are $15 for children, $20 for adults, and $10 for Millersville University students. For tickets call 717-872-3811 or visit MUTicketsOnline.com.
COBALT will be the inaugural dance company performing at the recently opened Winter Center, and will also perform there in early February and mid-May 2013. COBALT is a preprofessional
dance company based in Lancaster and dedicated to creating, performing, and educating through original choreographic works.
