University City Arts League Gallery is proud to present Philadelphia painter and muralist Ann Northrup, in her exhibition entitled Cultivating the Urban Wild November 9 – 30, 2012. Northrup’s exhibit at the UCAL Gallery at 4226 Spruce Street will feature sections of a mural-in-progress alongside watercolor paintings of the Wissahickon landscape.

The public is invited to two events: a reception for the artist on Friday, November 9th, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.; and an artist’s talk on Sunday, November 18th at 2:00 p.m.

Northrup will speak on November 18th about her impressive career as a Philadelphia mural artist. Northrup will be joined by guest artist, Tjai Abdullah, who began her career as a mural artist through the Mural Arts Restorative Justice program. They will discuss their work together, the mentor/student relationship, and the challenges and rewards of mural painting.

Northrup will install sections from her latest mural, “Cultivating the Urban Wild”, in the UCAL Gallery. The sections are painted on a non-woven fabric and will be ultimately installed on an exterior wall in the Spring Garden neighborhood next spring. Northrup draws on her studio and landscape painting in developing her mural imagery. Her pleine-aire watercolor landscape paintings will feature in the exhibition because of their seminal influence on her murals.
