Philadelphia’s poet laureate Sonia Sanchez leads a Mural Arts Month celebration of Peace is a Haiku Song, a mural project that engages the Philadelphia community and beyond in an exploration of the haiku as a vehicle for peace and urban transformation. Famous Philadelphians, singers, musicians, and special literary guests will perform for and with Sanchez in honor of her significant contributions to the cultural landscape and her commitment to unifying humanity through art. The Mural Arts Program initiated winter and spring workshops based on the haiku form and its intersection with other disciplines (painting, photography, and music) with art education students, who reflected on their personal visions of peace. Through the curriculum, students have been introduced to Sanchez’s literary and humanitarian legacy and have had the unique opportunity to practice mindfulness and peace through art-making and civic engagement.

Event funded by City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, City Hall Presents / City of Philadelphia Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy.

The Philadelphia Mural Arts Program fills October with celebrations of art for Mural Arts Month. The month will be highlighted by a series of events including exhibitions, mural dedications, celebrity mural tours, murals and meals tours, a book signing, and artist talks.
