Saving America's Exceptional Gardens
November 7, 2012
Antonia Adezio
President, The Garden Conservancy
Exceptional gardens most often begin as private affairs, the life work of passionate, dedicated, and remarkably talented gardeners. Even though they may be carefully tended over several generations, these gardens can fall into ruin over time. The Garden Conservancy was established to safeguard the country’s rich garden and landscape heritage. Conservancy President Antonia Adezio has been with the Garden Conservancy since 1989 when she helped Frank Cabot establish the organization. Her presentation will feature a few of the 90 beautiful gardens that have been saved. She will tell the inspiring stories of the garden makers of these living works of art, and describe the steps the Garden Conservancy takes to preserve them for the education and enjoyment of future generations. Some of the gardens that she will profile include: California’s Ruth Bancroft Garden, the very first project of the Conservancy and recognized as one of the finest American gardens; The Chase Garden, an outstanding example of Pacific Northwest modernist garden style; Peckerwood Garden, with rare, drought-resistant plants native to southern U.S. and the remote mountains of Mexico; Rocky Hills, a beautiful 14-acre garden in the rugged, rocky woodlands just north of NYC.; and the 150 year old Gardens of Alcatraz.
