For gardeners the growing season is never long enough. Learn how you can extend the blooms of fall into winter by selecting plants judiciously and by maximizing the use of microclimates. A microclimate is the climate of a small area that is different from the area around it. It may be warmer or colder, wetter or drier, or more or less prone to frosts. Denis will show you how to take greatest advantage of these protected places. He will also consider fall-blooming bulbs as well as early spring shrubs, bulbs and ephemeral wildflowers. You will start to think of fall and winter differently as Denis focuses on interesting branch structure, beautiful bark, and evergreens that offer color highlights. Great plants for the Delaware Valley will be highlighted including witchhazel, spicebush, dogwood, mahonia, viburnum, chimonanthus, sarcococca, and camellia. The lecture will be supplemented with live specimens.
