The Chesapeake Bay – A National Natural Treasure
October 10, 2012
Harry Campbell
Senior Scientist, The Chesapeake Bay Foundation
The Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in the United States, and it’s one of the most productive in the world. Estuaries, or areas where fresh and salt water meet, provide habitat and spawning grounds for a wide array of fish and other aquatic life, as well as birds and mammals. The Bay also generates vast quantities of food for the millions of people living in the Bay region, and beyond. While the blue crab may be the most famous Bay resident and food source for many, there are thousands of other species, including humans, that make up this system; and each plays a role in maintaining or tilting the natural balance of the Bay. Unfortunately, the Bay has been out of balance and in trouble for decades. But many dedicated people throughout the watershed are doing their part to help out – from planting rain gardens and native plants, to turning paved landscapes into greenscapes. For nearly 40 years the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) has been a leader in the fight to protect and restore the Bay and the thousands of rivers, creeks, and streams of the six states (including PA), that make up the Chesapeake Bay watershed. CBF’s Pennsylvania Senior Scientist Harry Campbell will share the story of the Bay, the species that depend on it, and the work that is being done to save this national treasure.
