Paint the town red this First Friday with a natural-dye workshop at CHF. For thousands of years humans obtained dyes from plant and animal sources. While today’s synthetic dyes are used to produce colors on an industrial scale, natural dyes still provide a gorgeous array of hues and have fewer negative effects on the environment.

Now, thanks to local dye and design house Blue Red Yellow, the natural-dye tradition is alive and well in Philadelphia. Experts from Blue Red Yellow and the National Association of Sustainable Fashion Designers will explain how natural and synthetic dyes differ and give tips on growing your own dye garden full of color-yielding plants. They’ll also demonstrate natural dying using marigolds. Visitors will be able to color their very own piece of fabric to take home.
