Hooked on Wood: The Allure of the Fish Decoy
May 18-July 21, 2012
This exhibition will showcase modern fish decoys and highlight historical works as early as 3000 years ago. The history and craft of fishing lores will be explored with over 100 fish decoys on display: Ice spearing decoys – a handmade utilitarian tool, trophy fish – decorative piscatorial portraits, fishing lures and baits and folk sculpture. Even though the majority of hooked fishing lures were mass manufactured on the lathe by a number of companies through the century, this exhibition will bring to light the beautiful techniques of artists, craftsman and fishermen who produce these decoys for recreation, sport and to secure food.
