FILM

Fiddler on the Roof
January 8, 2012
Based upon the wonderful stories of Shalom Aleichem and the long-running hit Broadway show, this is the heartening story of Tevye (played by Oscar-nominated Israeli actor, Topol), the milkman in a small 1900 village in the Ukraine who is committed to preserving Jewish heritage (as beautifully expressed in his song “Tradition”) in the face of increasingly frustrating odds.
Filled with memorable hit songs (“Sunrise, Sunset;” “If I Were a Rich Man;” “Matchmaker, Matchmaker”), this is a film, and a story, to be cherished and enjoyed for generations to come.
Note: Famed classical violinist Isaac Stern was the one who did the actual fiddling on the soundtrack of this film. Also, Topol was on active duty with the Israeli army when he was nominated for an Oscar for Fiddler on the Roof in early 1972. He was granted leave so he could attend the ceremony in Los Angeles that year. (Bill Roth)
Directed by Norman Jewison. US. 1971. G. 181 min. MGM. Blu ray. Sponsored by Congregation B'nai Jacob.
