The Gershman Y joins with its neighbor across the street, Philadelphia Theatre Company, for a theatrically-themed Shabbat. The Scottsboro Boys, the 12-time Tony-nominated musical about nine African American boys who were unjustly accused of rape in 1931 Alabama, has a fascinating Jewish connection. From Yiddish poetry and press that was written in support of the Scottsboro Boys to the larger civil rights implications of the show, Jews were engaged in this history for equal rights. Join The Y for a delicious kosher Shabbat dinner and then stay for a short discussion with the Y's colleagues from Philadelphia Theatre Company as they talk about the Jewish and civil rights aspects of this musical. Afterwards, go for a walk across the street and see The Scottsboro Boys at 8 pm (tickets to the show are an additional cost).
