Vernal pools are remarkable wetland features best known as prolific breeding areas for amphibians. Their temporarily ponded, or “ephemeral” nature prevents the establishment of resident fish populations. Yet they function as a perfect aquatic breeding environment for the short time they exist. This presentation will discuss which of our local amphibians have evolved with reproductive strategies that take advantage of these short-lived conditions, and what lifestyle adaptations this has required.
