Closing Weekend at the First Person Festival
November 18-November 20, 2011
Liberty City:
Liberty City, April Yvette Thompson’s powerful one-woman show, takes place at the end of the 1970’s Black Power Movement in Miami. Liberty City weaves a rich story of family, race, and the value of understanding your history while forging your own path. With chameleon-like skill, Thompson deftly brings to life the many people that shaped her experience, including her progressive, Cuban-Bahamian father and African-American mother. The show climaxes with the infamous Liberty City riots and the journey a young girl must take to protect her family.
Described by the Village Voice as “[a] definitive example of the solo show,” Liberty City was nominated for a Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Solo Show and Thompson received Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle nominations for Best Solo Performance.
Get Real with Fourth Wall Arts:
At this special salon, curated especially for the First Person Festival, favorite Fourth Wall Arts Salon artists get personal. Dancers Makoto Hirano and Khalil Munir use music and movement to tell an intimate tale of miracles and survival. Musicians Lloyd Alexander, Monica McIntyre, and DJ Supreme accompany them for a night of performance that is personal and collaborative, soulful and celebratory.
