William Larson: The Cut /
November 18, 2011-January 28, 2012
In a series of projects over the past forty years, William Larson has examined the intersection between cinema and still photography. Classic early work utilized a motor to pull film past a camera aperture, rendering a sense of motion and elapsed time in a still photograph. Recent bodies of work have conversely turned to the true nature of cinema—as a sequence of still images. Larson finds it particularly poignant to consider the shared characteristics of still and “moving” images as both lose their materiality to digital processes. The exhibition will also include screenings of Serif: A Memoir By William Larson, “written” in film fragments. The seemingly disconnected fragments unfold not so much as a storyline, but as a very personal biographical topology. Please join us on Friday, November 18 from 6 – 8 pm for an opening reception with the artist.
