Open Wound is the fictionalized story of U.S. Army assistant surgeon William Beaumont an his lifelong relationship with an illiterate French Canadian patient. Rooted in historic fact, author and Medical Ethics professor Jason Karlawish examines the complex relationship between the two in a story that personifies the best and worst aspects of American ambition.

Karlawish is professor of medicine and medical ethics and senior fellow of the Center for Bioethics at Penn.
