A Conversation with George McGovern | What it Means to be a Democrat
November 17, 2011
Recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom and one of the great humanitarians of our time, Senator George McGovern has dedicated much of his career to eliminating hunger and poverty. As the distinguished senator from South Dakota, he carried his home state’s heartland values into Congress for more than twenty years. As a 1972 presidential candidate, McGovern campaigned against the Vietnam War during one of the most divisive eras in U.S. history. Stressing farm-support programs and rights for rural Americans, McGovern directed the Food for Peace Program under John F. Kennedy, and has served as United Nations Global Ambassador on World Hunger since 2001. In What it Means to Be a Democrat, McGovern draws on his expertise on issues ranging from military spending to same-sex marriage to educational reform, offering a vision of the party’s future in which ideological courage thrives.
In conversation with Dick Polman, national political columnist at the Philadelphia Inquirer.
