Despite past notable efforts, there is a continued need to bring the names of Black classical music composers to the attention of all performers, listeners and the general public. There are many hundreds of these composers who span centuries and the continents of Europe, Africa, North America and South America. This symposium and panel, "The Black Composer in Classical Music," will aid with an increase in the level of awareness. A special honor and award is planned for one of them, composer George Walker.

Sponsors: Temple University, Department of African American Studies; and Free Library, Department of Music and Fleisher Music Collection
