Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival Presents: Berlin '36
November 13, 2011
Based on an incredible true story. Gretel Bergmann is the best female high jumper in Germany — a sure champion for the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. The problem is she is Jewish, not Aryan. Under international pressure, Nazi officials use Bergmann for propagandistic purposes and allow her to train with the German team. Though she endures anti-Semitic threats and abuse, her biggest struggle is with a peculiar roommate who is recruited by the Nazi Party to edge Bergmann out of the games. The burgeoning friendship between the two alienated athletes frames this fascinating and suspenseful film. This Audience Award-winner at Jewish Film Festivals across the country dramatizes a little-known episode of the early years of Nazi Germany.
In German with English subtitles.
