LECTURES & LITERATURE

Fall Philosophy Festival Part 1: Theater and the Age of Reason
October 10, 2011
Presented in conjunction with our production of NEW JERUSALEM, THE INTERROGATION OF BARUCH DE SPINOZA AT TALMUD TORAH CONGREGATION: AMSTERDAM, JULY 27, 1656, this festival will explore the Jewish experience in Europe and Spinoza's lasting influence on art, literature, and philosophy through a series of special events with artists and guest scholars.
Panel Discussion: The Sephardic Community in Amsterdam with Anne Oravetz Albert of the University of Pennsylvania's Department of History. Although Spinoza himself was undoubtedly unique, the community that first nurtured and then expelled him was singular in its own right. This lecture will present the history of Sephardic Jews in Amsterdam, revealing how their culture was shaped by a history of domination by others and persistence in the face of obstacles.
