What if everyone in a quiet, little English country village were to go into an unexplained trance for 24 hours, after which all the women of child-bearing age were to suddenly become pregnant? And what if all the children born nine months after this incident were to look and act eerily alike?

And then, what if these odd, blond-haired, emotionless children were to begin to display strange, seemingly telepathic powers and a yearning for world domination? Well that?s the compelling premise of this splendid adaptation of John Wyndham?s acclaimed horror novel, The Midwich Cuckoos. George Sanders, normally cast as all kinds of a cad, finally gets his chance to be heroic, as this classic exercise in terror builds to its suspenseful and explosive climax. (Note this is not the tepid and confusing 1996 remake by John Carpenter. This is the real thing.) (Bill Roth)

Directed by Wolf Rilla. UK. 1960. NR. 77 min. Warner Bros. 35mm.
