Want to know what's more scary than giant, ugly, bug-eyed monsters or robots? This month we're going to be showing classic films featuring something much scarier – little children with cold, glaring eyes, unnatural cunning, and no qualms whatsoever about murder. Or, in other words, instead of providing Halloween scares for the kiddies, this month we're letting the kiddies scare us.

To start the month off right, we're presenting the screen version of Maxwell Anderson's highly regarded stage play about a seemingly sweet little girl with an angelic face who may have inherited some very bad tendencies (like, for instance, murdering a schoolmate because he won the penmanship medal that she had wanted.) All three female leads in this film – Nancy Kelly, Eileen Heckert and Patty McCormack (who eerily portrays Rhoda, the child without a conscience) – were nominated for well-deserved Academy Awards for their performances in this truly unsettling and thought-provoking film classic. (Bill Roth)

Directed by Mervyn LeRoy. US. 1956. NR. 129 min. Warner Bros. Blu ray.
