Gene Shay Presents Aztec Two-Step at the Psalm Salon
October 15, 2011
Legendary DJ Gene Shay of WXPN’s Folk Show will present venerable folk-rock duo Aztec Two-Step to perform an intimate concert celebrating the duo’s 40th Anniversary.
When Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman, the critically acclaimed duo Aztec Two-Step, burst on the scene in 1972 with their Elektra Records debut, they were reviewed as having the “intellectual lyricism” and “ethereal harmonies” of their legendary predecessors, Simon & Garfunkel. Aztec Two-Step’s name comes from a Lawrence Ferlinghetti poem, and since 1971 Fowler and Shulman have been writing and performing songs that helped make their generation’s musical memories. The recording from their self-titled debut album (Elektra Records), The Persecution and Restoration of Dean Moriarty was the first song written about Jack Kerouac’s iconic American novel On The Road. Renowned for bringing the folk/rock music of the 1960s into the ‘70s and beyond, Aztec Two-Step continues to be one of acoustic music’s most respected acts. After 40 years, the duo continues to impress audiences with intelligent songwriting, dazzling acoustic lead guitar, and inspiring harmonies, and remains one of acoustic music’s most popular and enduring acts.
