Kicking off the 7th season of the Jazz Bridge Neighborhood Concerts flagship series will be legendary drummer Charlie Rice and his band, featuring pianist Don Wilson, bassist Ed Wise, saxophonist Bob Howell and trombonist Clifford Adams. Rice has been a mainstay of the Philadelphia scene since the late 1940s. He had an extended run with Jimmy Oliver's house band at the Downbeat opposite visiting stars such as Parker, Gillespie, Bud Powell and Hank Jones during 1945 and into 1947. Then he led the first house band in Club 421 with Vance Wilson, Red Garland, bassist Bob Bushnell, and trumpeter Johnny Hughes. Around this time he played rehearsals with Jimmy Heath's big band until he was tapped for a USO tour to the South Pacific in 1951 with J.J. Johnson and Howard McGhee. Later Rice played with Sonny Stitt, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, and Leo Parker. He toured and recorded with Chet Baker in 1964 and 1965. Check out Baker's Baby Breeze CD—Charlie has a killer solo on that one.
