Art-at-Lunch: Advertising Beauty and the Modern American Woman
September 28, 2011
New ideals of feminine beauty emerged in American culture in the early 20th century, fostered by new consumer businesses and by women who self-consciously embraced the “modern.” Kathy Peiss, author of Hope in Jar: The Making of America’s Beauty Culture explores these images as they were pictured and publicized in cosmetics advertising, revealing tensions over artifice and the “natural,” women’s identity and appearance, and tradition versus modernity.
The Art-at-Lunch series of talks on American art and culture takes place every Wednesday. Bring your lunch and enjoy discussions and lectures with scholars and artists covering a variety of topics related to PAFA’s exhibitions, collections, and areas of interest.
