Music flourished in the towns of the New World in the late 16th through 18th centuries as old world Spanish musical culture, dominated by the Catholic Church, met a fertile and flourishing indigenous practice. In part two of Piffaro’s Journey, travel to four different countries to explore the rich and thriving results -- something recognizably European at its core, but infused with local hues and textures. Hear villancicos, motets and mass movements, interspersed with instrumental dances that were a part of the musical traditions in Mexico, Guatemala, Bolivia and Peru. With guests The Rose Ensemble, a vocal group from Minnesota, and actor Dito Van Reigersberg, who will weave together the West to East journey.

Funded by the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage through the Philadelphia Music Project, this concert is part of a larger community outreach to regional Spanish-speaking children in Kennett Square and North Philadelphia. Piffaro’s pre-concert talk will feature the artistic collaboration and work with the community.
