Asylum: Inside the Closed World of State Mental Hospitals
September 26-October 29, 2011
In Asylum: Inside the World of State Mental Hospitals, Christopher Payne’s photographs challenge the common portrayal of mental hospitals as places of nightmarish squalor and abuse, as often seen in popular media. The photographs will recognize these institutions that were once monuments of civic pride, built with noble intentions by leading architects and physicians, who envisioned the asylums as a place of refuge, therapy and healing.
