LECTURES & LITERATURE

A Conversation with Brian Selznick
September 17, 2011
Brian Selznick’s children’s novel about a twelve-year-old orphan, clock keeper, and thief, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, wove crisscrossing narratives of prose and finely detailed drawings. Beautifully crafted and ecstatically received, its deserved victory lap was impressive—a tradition-busting Caldecott Medal, bestseller lists, a National Book Award finalist nod, and even a Martin Scorsese film adaptation. The author and illustrator of three other books, and illustrator of several more, Selznick constructs a world of bottomless curiosity that appeals to both children and adults. His new novel, Wonderstruck, interlaces two independent tales—one in words, the other in pictures—about the lives of two children living fifty years apart.
