After two years spent performing the musics of Melvin Van Peebles, Miles Davis, David Bowie and James Brown in venues as disparate as Lincoln Center, The Apollo Theatre, Sons d'hiver Festival in Paris France and Rikers Island Prison, Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber returns to Philadelphia and to conducted improvisational form to celebrate the release of their new studio album 'ALL YOU NEED IS NEGROCITY' (AVANT GROIDD RECORDS) Burnt Sugar, Rock 'n' Roll Suicide & Breaking Glass, Lincoln Center, NYC 3-10-11 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFXRZASEC78 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZFzjjIbcCU Founded by writer, conductor, producer, musician and Village Voice icon Greg Tate in 1999, Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber is a sprawling band of musicians whose prodigious chops cover a wide swath of the experimental soul-jazz-hip hop spectrum. Anchored by Jason DiMatteo (acoustic bass) and Jared Michael Nickerson (electric bass), the live version of the group can feature as many as 22 players at any one time. The stalwarts tend to include singers Lisala, Karma Mayet Johnson, Justice Dilla-X (vocals & effected vocals), Mikel Banks (vocals & freak-a-phone), Derrin Maxwell (mc), Mazz Swift (violin & vocals), William Martina (cello), André Lassalle (guitar), Asim Barnes (guitar), Ben Tyree (guitar), Lewis "Flip" Barnes Jr. (trumpet), Michael Veal (soprano sax/electric bass), Micah Gaugh (alto sax), V. Jeffery Smith (tenor sax), "Moist" Paula Henderson (baritone sax), Bruce Mack (synthesizer & vocals), W. Myles Reilly (piano), LaFrae Sci (drums), Chris Eddleton (drums) and Qasim Naqvi (drums) as well as occasional "special guest" like Imani Uzuri (vocals), Shelley Nicole (vocals & percussion), Josh Roseman (trombone), Vernon Reid (guitar), Latasha Nevada Diggs (live dub-efx), or noted installation artist Satch Hoyt (flute & percussion) who's now living in Berlin -- Oh yes the Arkestra Chamber is global like that! With playing credits ranging from Toshi Reagon, DJ Logic, Gary Lucas, Gordon Gano, TV On The Radio, Tamar Kali, Charlie Musselwhite, Gogol Bordello, Vernon Reid, The The and Phish, to William Parker, Suphala, Cyro Baptistas, Liz Wright, the Holmes Brothers, Wadada Leo Smith, Claudio Roditi, David Murray and Joseph Bowie this is a very accomplished crew. Greg Tate says, "Burnt Sugar got the nerve to claim Morton Feldman, Brian Eno and Steve Reich as progenitors alongside Billie Holiday, Jimi Hendrix and Vladislav Delay. Their player-ranks have been known to include devotees of Steve Lacy and Steve Coleman, Irish fiddlers, AACM refugees, Afropunk rockers, staunch beboppers, feminist hiphoppers, doowoppers, funk-a-teers and rodeo stars of the digital divide." A recent review from Burnt Sugar's two-night JB tribute at Von King Park in Brooklyn N.Y. : http://lucidculture.wordpress.com/2011/06/18/burnt/ http://www.myspace.com/burntsugarthearkestrachamber iNFiNiEN Philadelphia-born iNFiNiEN combines eclectic musical personalities into a visionary, unified force. With rock, jazz, soul, world, and classical influences, the quartet plays intricately composed songs with a focus on improvisation. After playing together for four years, iNFiNiEN has discovered its own voice both live and in the studio. Their diverse influences are portrayed, but the sound produced is unique. iNFiNiEN has been compared to Bjork, Radiohead, Mahavishnu Orchestra, and John Zorn’s Masada. Far from the typical rock band, they explore new territories of sound by using exotic scales, chords, and rhythms. The drums project driving tribal beats, mixing elements of hardcore, funk, and jazz. The bass moves through a complex and constantly changing web of deep grooves. The guitar and keyboard create a wash of texture and colorful melodies. The fluid female vocals add a strong emotional element through soulful poetry and deliberate dynamics. iNFiNiEN stirs listeners through a moving musical adventure. "Calling it "fusion" isn't even entirely correct, since that smacks of cocktail parties and easy-listening boredom. This is the sublimation of styles, a group of highly trained players sacrificing their training for the sake of something more exciting." -Philadelphia City Paper. "iNFiNiEN’s set is dynamic and energizing, with Loftus rolling her head and emoting like a languid seductress. The music is moody, jazzy, lounge-y and dramatic, with dissonant chords resolving into melody and tinkering Middle Eastern sounds. For most of their set, they’re joined by New Orleans saxophonist Kyle Cripps, whose jazzy playing adds another layer to their sonic creations. Their last track, “Perpetual Twilight,” is 10 minutes long, and devolves into a raucous, thrashing collage of sound. It’s the perfect end to a long evening, and I leave feeling like the possibilities for music are truly infinite."-Phrequency.com. http://www.myspace.com/infinien
