For over the past decade, Philly-based record label Ropeadope has been exploring the inner and outer boundaries of jazz and hip hop music by releasing innovative works by the Philadelphia Experiment, King Britt, Jneiro Jarel and many more both local and international artists. This Saturday, they are looking to continue their legacy with a new monthly showcase entitled "What is Jazz?|What is Hip Hop?". Since their very inception, Ropeadope has been ignoring the questions "is this jazz?" or "is this hip hop?" and instead, have been asking "what IS jazz?" and "what IS hip hop?". This month's installment features Schooly D as host, Stoupe of Jedi Mind Tricks as house DJ and Snarky Puppy as house band. The night will start off with a jazz/funk set by Snarky Puppy, who will then back an emcee cipher featuring Apuat, Noesis (of Philly Slick), as well as Chess, Ty Ward and Poole of Wyldelyfe. In support of the big show this Saturday, head over here to download volume one of the What is Jazz?|What Is Hip Hop? mixtape for free! The tape features 12 tracks from the Ropeadope catalog.
