Carolina Chocolate Drops
September 22, 2011
Grammy Award Winning North Carolina-based string band the Carolina Chocolate Drops seeks to keep the centuries-old string music tradition alive and developing. Lauded by SPIN for bringing “a modern sizzle to the legacy of classic African American string bands” and hailed by NPR’s All Things Considered as “a wonderful thing to watch,” the trio is getting the major attention of music critics, historians & fans and have been heavily featured on NPR including Morning Edition, World Cafe & Fresh Air. All three band members were trained in the Piedmont banjo and fiddle musical tradition under the tutelage of Joe Thompson, who, at age 90, is believed to be the last living performer from the Piedmont string band heyday. Their label debut on Nonesuch Records, Genuine Negro Jig, produced by critically acclaimed recording artist and songwriter Joe Henry (Allen Toussaint, Elvis Costello, Solomon Burke), landed at No. 1 on the Billboard Bluegrass chart and at No. 7 on the Heatseekers chart its first week out. (Cabaret reserved for Theater Members until 8/22/11)
“The urge to dance is nearly irresistible.”—USA Today
“Several generations removed from the origins of their chosen idiom, the Carolina Chocolate Drops are nonetheless the genuine article.”—Paste
