Summer Reading Program: Discover the World @ Your Library
June 2-August 12, 2011
Discover the world with storytelling, crafts and the Phillie Phanatic at Free Library's Summer Reading Kickoff. During the event, students can get creative at craft stations that will feature a real mummy, listen to stories, sign up for Summer Reading, and dance with the Phillie Phanatic. The Summer Reading kickoff will celebrate a new season of the annual program, which combines reading with special programs, activities and a game board that helps students keep track of their progress and earn chances to win prizes from participating sponsors. Free Library President and Director Siobhan A. Reardon will open the kickoff and greet attendees, including Philadelphia school students. She will be joined by lead sponsor representatives Vince Liuzzi, Regional President of Wells Fargo, and Doug Smith, Director of External Affairs at Verizon, who will read to the students. Running from June 20 through August 12, the Summer Reading program supports literacy by encouraging more than 60,000 children and teens to read during the summer months. Studies continue to suggest that the simple act of reading six or more books during the summer can help students avoid “brain drain” and even make gains in their reading levels.
