Like the recent Will Smith film, I Am Legend, this film was based on Richard Matheson's classic futuristic novel of that name. However, that's about where the resemblance ends. Rather than computer-generated thrills, this very eerie film relies upon a genuine sense of dread and tension, as our hero (Charlton Heston, no less!) finds himself to be the last remaining human in the world, after a viral apocalypse which has given rise to a race of lethal zombie-like creatures.

You are invited to watch as our hero seeks to survive an on-going siege, while searching for other possible human survivors, and get a feel for what it would be like to be there, the day after Doomsday. (NOTE: This is the second of three Films based on Matheson's novel, the first of which was The Last Man on Earth (1964), starring Vincent Price and a bunch of post-apocalyptic vampires. Many critics feel that The Omega Man is the best of the bunch. Let us know what you think.) (Bill Roth)

Directed by Boris Sagal. US. 1971. PG-13. 98 min. WB. 35mm.
