What better way to enjoy a bright, sunny July afternoon than to contemplate the extermination of humankind? Well this month we have rounded up a group of some of the finest and most influential films dealing with the various ways in which our civilization could be wiped out, starting with that grand-daddy of them all, the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

Based upon the novel by Jack Finney, this classic film deals terrifyingly with a small group of people's efforts to fend off an invasion of “pod people” who are insidiously replicating and eliminating the populace of a small town, on their way to taking over the world. Though some have seen the film as being a political allegory on the paranoia and hysteria of the anti-communist McCarthy era, it succeeds just as well as a really great scary movie, as our heroes and heroines fend off the threat of outer-space aliens taking over our world. (Bill Roth)

Directed by Don Siegel. US. 1956. NR. 80 min. Paramount. 35mm.
