Join The Clay Studio for a lecture by Pattie Chalmers about her work. "An interest in narrative, especially stories that I grew up with, shapes my current work. The Grimm Brothers, Hans Christian Anderson and Aesop mesh with blurry cullings from childhood movies-of-the-week and the half-price, unpopular comics my parents would allow on summer vacations. These haphazard bonds result in sculptures that observe relationships and social phenomena. The synthesis is personal but the images are given in familiar language: pensive children, crisp business suits or Flemish matrons for example, address the eye. Although my approach to making work could be characterized as somewhat frenetic, the fragments congeal into a kind of moral corn maze that one can enjoy finding their way out of. I merge figurative elements into situations where the threshold between material truth and fiction falls into question. Charged with emotion, the images depict absurdity and beauty as I think they occur in both waking and dreaming life."
