A proud part of the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts (PIFA), Black Pearl Chamber Orchestra Music Director Maestra Jeri Lynne Johnson will explore the impact of “hot” jazz on the emerging modern styles of two of Paris’s most iconic composers: Igor Stravinsky and Darius Milhaud. Master jazz trombonist Wycliffe Gordon and members of the Rodney Mack Philadelphia Big Brass will join the BPCO in a musical journey that will take the audience from Paris to Harlem and back again. Pre-jazz Stravinsky and Milhaud pieces open the concert followed by selections of some of the sizzling sounds of rag time and Dixieland music Black musicians were cooking up in America. The concert ends where it began when the BPCO returns to Paris with works from both composers that resulted from their encounters with jazz - Stravinsky's Rag Time for 11 Instruments and Milhaud's daring ballet suite, La creation du monde.
