A Philadelphia Book Festival Event: A Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets since 2006, Kay Ryan served two terms as Poet Laureate of the United States, from 2008-2010. Her awards include three Pushcart Prizes and the 2004 Ruth Lilly Prize for Poetry, and her poems have appeared in four editions of The Best American Poetry and in The Best of the Best American Poetry: 1988-1997. Poet J.D. McClatchy says of Ryan’s work: “Her poems are compact, exhilarating, strange affairs, like Erik Satie miniatures or Joseph Cornell boxes. She is an anomaly in today's literary culture: as intense and elliptical as Dickinson, as buoyant and rueful as Frost.” Her collections include Flamingo Watching, Say Uncle, and The Niagara River.
