May 12, 2011
Motion Pictures is a monthly series surveying significant movements and genres in film culture. Science Fiction: Solaris, dir. Andrei Tarkovsky, USSR, 1972, 35mm, 166 mins, color, Russian w/ English subtitles. Cosmonaut and psychologist Kris Kelvin is sent to investigate strange transmissions from the residents of the Solaris space station. He experiences the same strange phenomena that afflicted the crew, sending him on a voyage into the darkest recesses of his own consciousness. Legendary Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky creates a brilliantly original science fiction epic that challenges our preconceived notions of love, truth, and humanity itself.
