MUSIC

Shadows of Gesualdo
April 8, 2011
Join us for an extraordinary journey into the world of 17th century southern Italy and the mind of one of the most eccentric and compelling musical minds of early modern Europe. Don Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa, nephew of St. Charles Borromeo, and great nephew of Pope Pius IV was a politician, humanist, composer, and murderer. Audacious enough to slaughter his wife and her lover, Gesualdo was also bold enough to write music that defied the conventions of his day and plunges you headlong into a musical realization of the final agonies of Christ. Accompanying this music are the latter-day sounds of Benjamin Britten’s "Canticles" and Igor Stravinsky’s "Pater Noster." The evening ends with Gregorio Allegri’s renowned “Miserere,” a worldly expression of angelic mourning. This year marks the 400th anniversary of the publication of Gesualdo’s Tenebrae responsories.
