The late medieval musical duo Asteria will present a workshop on “Music of the 15th Century—European Courts” at Montgomery County Community College on March 21 from 1:30-3 p.m. The presentation will be held in the Science Center Theater, 340 DeKalb Pike, Blue Bell, and will be simulcast to South Hall 216 at the College’s West Campus, 101 College Drive Pottstown. The event is free and is open to the public.

In addition to a live performance, participants will view slides from medieval musical manuscripts, learn secrets used to decipher the ancient notations, and hear the differences between a chanson and a motet. Attendees will also learn about the medieval and Renaissance traditions of courtly love that gave rise to the Arthurian legends and many of the romantic clichés of the medieval period.

Formed in 2004, Asteria—comprised of Sylvia Rhyne, soprano, and Eric Redlinger, tenor and lute—won Early Music America’s first Unicorn Prize for Medieval and Renaissance Music.

The workshop is being sponsored by the College’s Music department and Virtual Visiting Scholar program. Local high schools have also been invited to participate in the workshop via video conference.
