So much of the history of Philadelphia was formed by its churches. When William Penn first arrived to build the city he was determined to welcome any and all denominations, to ensure that the persecution he had known was not copied here. As a result, many different religious groups set up home here and there are many historic churches in a small area. As well, the first African Methodist Episcopal Church, the Mother Bethel A.M.E Church was established here by Richard Allen in 1794. You’ll get to see as many churches as we can fit in the time, inside and out, choosing from Christ Church, where George Washington, John Adams and Betsy Ross all worshipped, St. George’s Methodist, St. Augustine’s Catholic, Arch Street Meeting House, the largest Quaker Meeting House in the world, Mother Bethel, St. Peter’s, The Pine Street Presbyterian, the Cathedral Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul, and many others.
