Only an hour to 90 minutes out of Philadelphia lies the beautiful landscaped scenery of Lancaster County, home of many Amish and Mennonite families, and a popular tourist destination. Both the Amish and Mennonite religions are Anabaptist in their foundation, although it is the Amish that people generally come to see, because of their strict adherence to a number of principles (known as the ordnung). In particular, the Amish people do not drive motorized vehicles, wear very similar clothing, one to another, ride around in buggies pulled by beautifully kept horses, use simple farm machinery to work their fields, forgo the use of electricity in the homes and hang their washing out to dry on long lines, raised high above their yards. Depending on the length of your tour, you will drive along many of the country roads that criss-cross the area, view a 40-minute movie about growing up as an Amish boy, take a buggy ride of your own desired length, visit a local bakery, tour a museum set up as the Amish have lived for more than two centuries in the area, and you’ll get the chance to buy souvenirs at one of the many craft stores and quilt shops.
