West Philadelphia Orchestra founder and bandleader Gregg Mervine has composed a suite of new music that blends folkloric sounds from Eastern Europe and Brazil, cantorial music, rock and hip hop, jazz improvisation, and contemporary classical. The songs conjure the shiftiness of Hershel, the horror and cruelty of the goblins, the fear and outrage of the oppressed villagers, and the triumph of the finale (it's a happy ending). The music represents a fresh approach to folk music, including klezmer, that will have your feet tapping and your imaginations whirling. Members of the band are Gregg Mervine (percussion, guitar, flute), Larry Goldfinger (C, Bb, and bass clarinets, glockenspiel), Shinjoo Cho (accordion, melodica), and Chris Coyle (acoustic bass).

Come out for this special sneak peak into the creative process. Readings of the book, discussions, and an open klezmer jam session hosted by Gregg Mervine and the Hershel band will follow. Follow the development of the Hershel production at gasandelectricarts.com. We are still raising funds and your donation can be made online or at the Tritone show on Monday, 3/28.
