Dancer and choreographer, Shannon Murphy is also a Level Two Franklin Method Educator, one of a very few in the United States. Murphy’s interest and training in the somatic and movement healing arts is evidenced in her newest dance project entitled Find. The work is inspired by the connections between ones physical being and their emotional and family history - a chain of events linking one moment to the next, with or without conscious thought. Murphy finds beauty in tying these seemingly unattached threads together creating a bit of organized chaos. This surrealistic matrix often appears to be a lonely world but it nurtures the abilities of both the audience and the performers to intertwine personal experience into its web.

As the title suggests, movement and sound were all uncovered in rehearsal and then crafted into the world of this evening length work. Murphy used the Franklin Method as a catalyst to create the movement vocabulary for Find performers Kristel Baldoz, Patricia Dominguez, and Jumatatu Poe. She explains that rather than using narrative to draw out the context from the work, she relied on the physical embodiment of the performers. “It was exciting” explains Murphy, “to sit back and let the dancers bodies tell me where to go next. Everything they did would affect the way I saw them in relationship to one another.”

Sound designer Steve Surgalski is a frequent collaborator of Murphy’s. For Find he has recorded sounds throughout the rehearsals including voices, bodies against the floor, and other available sounds. Surgalski used these fragments of sound to create bites of percussion and melodies. The music is human and yet digital, it is happening live yet you know when listening that it has happened before. Find marks the sixth and most elaborate collaboration between Murphy and Surgalski to date
