Les Films Muets is a silent film with live music event. The feature is the film The Mystery of the Rocks of Kador (1912, dir. Léonce Perret) with a new score by French composer Régis Huby, commissioned specially for this event by Relâche. This cerebral, Hitchcockian murder mystery is notable for its complex plot and camera-work that is ahead of its time. Also, several Max Linder short comedies will be screened with new scores by Chuck Holdeman, Greg Bowers and Chris McGlumphy. French actor and filmmaker Linder (1883-1925) was a pioneer of silent film who predated and influenced more well-known comedians including Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. In fact, after Linder’s death in a mysterious double suicide in 1925, Chaplin dedicated one of his films to Linder with the line, “For the unique Max, the great master - his student Charles Chaplin.” With his slapstick approach to comedy, Linder created what was probably the first identifiable motion-picture character to appear in successive situation comedies. Live music accompaniment for all films will be performed by the eight-member Relâche ensemble.

This event is part of the 2011 Philadelphia International Festival Of The Arts (PIFA).
