Truth is about the life of Sojourner Truth, ex-slave and fiery abolitionist and focuses on the life and times of this complicated, brilliant woman who, though illiterate, was a relentless champion of those deprived of justice and freedom. This new folk opera follows the trajectory of Sojourner’s life beginning when she walked with her baby, Sophie on her back toward freedom in 1826. Truth chronicles this journey, with the metaphor of her endless walking as the march to freedom and truth. The pivotal events in the opera include: the kidnapping of her son Peter and her triumph in court to regain motherhood of his battered seven year old body, her walk to New York where she learned the power of the spoken word to inspire and move people to action against injustice, her human frailty when she was swept up in the personality cult of Mathias where she again fought and gained justice in the courtroom against the libelous accusations of murder against her, the moment when her god gives her the name, Sojourner Truth, her walking, walking again from New York to Florence, Massachusetts where she lived and worked in freedom and equality and found her calling as an abolitionist feminist.
