Samarkand in the Age of Tamerlane (Timur Lang)
March 2, 2011
“Great Adventures along the Silk Road” Lecture Series. Samarkand in the Age of Tamerlane (Timur Lang). Old Samarkand, the present-day archaeological site of Afrasiyab, was completely destroyed by the Mongol invasions of 1220-23. Tamurlane's new capital of Samarkand arose in the adjoining gardens by the end of the 14th century. From this base, new cultural and commercial connections extended east, west and south. The new city and its spacious layout became a model for the early modern cities of Iran and India.
