MUSIC
An Evening of African-American Music
February 6, 2011
The Gospel Choir, under the direction of Rev. Gregory Ross, will feature selections from the late Timothy Wright, who was known as the godfather of gospel music. The choir will perform hits that include “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus,” “Come Thou Almighty King,” and “Great is He.”
The Saxtet, under the direction of Dr. George Starks, will perform three pieces in the concert, including “Blue Monk” and “Round Midnight” by Theolonius Monk. Karyn Peeples, a vocalist with the Jazz Orchestra, will also perform an a capella version of “Of Freedom,” which was a favorite of Black soldiers who fought in the Civil War.
